Barber-Scotia College participates in the Charlotte Area Educational Consortium, which enabling students to access courses offered by a total of 12 academic institutions in the community including other HBCU’s, community colleges and The University of North Carolina at Charlotte . In addition, the college is a member of the historically minority college/university consortium which is composed of 12 states including North Carolina .  The focus of the consortium is to provide support to minority students by enclosing the achievement gap in mathematics.

BACKGROUND

Bennett College is a private supported, historically Black, four-year, liberal arts College , which is affiliated with the United Methodist Church . Bennett ranks fourth among all Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the percentage of alumnae earning doctoral degrees. This Institution was founded as a coeducational institution and was reorganized in 1926 to become a College for Women.

 

HEALTH RELATED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Through a cooperative arrangement between Bennett College and Moses H. Cone Hospital in Greensboro , NC , the college affords opportunity for a student to receive a degree in Medical Technology from Bennett College upon satisfactory completion of the year of clinical training at Moses Cone Hospital . Also, through a cooperative agreement with North Carolina A&T State University , Bennett offers a Nursing and Allied Health Dual Degree program.  The graduate of this program receives a degree in Allied Health from Bennett and a Bachelor’s in Nursing from North Carolina A&T.

 

OTHER ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Bennett College offers 30 majors and awards the Bachelors of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Interdisciplinary Studies, and the Bachelor of Social Work degrees.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Bennett College participates in a number of cooperative arrangements, which serve to enrich educational experiences of its students.  It is a member of the Piedmont Independent College Association, offering cooperative access to courses at this institution and Greensboro College , Guilford College , Elon College , High Point University and Salem College .  It is a member of the Greater Greensboro Consortium in which this college maintains a consortium relationship with North Carolina A&T University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro , thus making it possible for a student from one institution to pursue curses at another.  Bennett College also participates in the Cooperative Program in Law established by St. John’s University , N.Y. , and the College Fund/UNCF.  This enables students who maintain the required grade point average to make the requisite score on the LSAT to be admitted to St. John’s at the beginning of their senior year.  Therefore, after satisfactory completion of one year of law school, the student is awarded a bachelor’s degree from Bennett College .  In addition, this institution has a Cooperative Program in Mathematics and Engineering Dual Degree Program Engineering Program.  Also, a dual degree major in engineering is offered through a cooperative arrangement with North Carolina A&T State University .  After five years of successful study in this program, students receive a degree from Bennett in either Mathematics or Chemistry and the Bachelor of Engineering degree from North Carolina A&T State University .

BACKGROUND

Elizabeth City State University was founded on March 3, 1891, when House Bill 383 was enacted by the North Carolina General Assembly, establishing a Normal School for the specific purpose of "teaching and training teachers of the colored race to teach in the common schools of North Carolina ." Hugh Cale, a black Representative from Pasquotank County , sponsored the Bill. Between 1891 and 1928, curricula and resources were expanded under the leadership of Peter Wedderick Moore. Enrollment increased from 23 to 355 and the faculty from 2 to 15 members by the time Dr. Moore retired as President-Emeritus on July 1, 1928.

BACKGROUND

Fayetteville State University is a state-supported comprehensive university.  In 1867 seven visionary Black citizens of Fayetteville , North Carolina paid $140.00 for two lots on Gillespie Street and formed among themselves a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees to maintain the property for the education of Black youth.  In 1969 the college was named Fayetteville State University , and designated a regional university by an act of the legislature. In 1972 Fayetteville State University became a part of The University of North Carolina. The University later became a Comprehensive Level I institution offering a variety of baccalaureate and master's degree programs. The Continuing Education program and the Ft. Bragg - Pope AFB Education Center were later established.

 

HEALTH RELATED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

The RN BSN program is offered by the Southeastern North Carolina Nursing Consortium cooperatively with Fayetteville State University, and University of North Carolina at Pembroke. The program is designed for registered nurses who wish to earn the baccalaureate nursing degree. Students select which institution to attend as each confers the BSN degree.

Through the Office of Public Education Outreach, Fayetteville State University has successfully established and maintains several outreach programs designed to bring FSU resources to bear on issues within the community. BACKGROUND

In 1867, the Rev. S.C. Alexander and the Rev. W. L. Miller saw the need to establish an institution in this section of the South and began to devise such plans as would secure the desired results. On April 7, 1867, at a meeting of the Catawba Presbytery in the old Charlotte Presbyterian Church, formerly located at the corner of D and Fourth streets, Charlotte , N.C. , the movement for the school was formally inaugurated, and these two ministers were elected as teachers. Johnson C. Smith is a private independent four-year college of liberal arts that confers bachelor’s degrees.  It seeks to develop students who are well prepared for their chosen occupations or professional careers and for living fulfilling personal lives in an ever-changing society.

BACKGROUND 

Livingstone College , a private, historically black institution, represents the tradition of excellent liberal arts and religious education programs secured by a strong commitment to quality instruction. The College's most distinctive feature is its history of self-reliance and perseverance. Connected to the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Livingstone College was founded in 1879 to meet the needs of African Americans who were denied access to educational opportunities. Today, the College provides an environment in which students from all ethnic backgrounds can develop their potential for leadership and service to society. Livingstone College also provides an environment suitable for learning and promotes Judeo-Christian values with respect for the global community. The college is a coeducational, residential, church related college located in Salisbury , the county seat of Rowan County , North Carolina .

Livingstone College offers a minor in health education.  Also, through an agreement with Howard University , Livingstone participates in a chemistry/pharmacy dual degree program.

Largely supported by the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Additional Information

Livingstone offers a dual-degree engineering program in conjunction with Clemson University and Georgia Institute of Technology. Also, the college seeks to provide academic options that prepare students to pursue careers in degree program with St. John’s University of Jamaica , New York .  For over 120 years, Livingstone has endeavored to provide academic operations that are entirely nonsectarian and open to men and women of graduate and professional studies and life-long learning. The Research Unit at Livingstone College is responsible for institutional research and services as a key support of academic research at the college. The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredits Livingstone College .

North Carolina A&T offers degree programs in the broad fields of agriculture, engineering, technology, business, education and the liberal arts and sciences.

North Carolina A&T participates extensively in cooperative agreements and consortia, especially in the areas of technology, engineering, and aerospace.  It has conducted NIH-sponsored projects.  It also has cooperative relationships with NASA, DOD, other federal agencies, Battelle Northwest Laboratory, and other universities.  It is a member of the HBCU/MI Environmental Restoration and Waste Management Consortium.  Under a cooperative agreement with Michigan State University and USAID, it supports international projects for food, nutrition, and agricultural development.  The primary mission of the Center of Aerospace Research is to conduct high quality research in aeronautics and astronautics. The core research themes are Aerospace Structures, Controls, and Guidance, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Propulsion, and Human-Machine Engineering. 

The Division of Research maintains a balanced and diverse portfolio of basic and applied research programs that are effectively integrated with undergraduate and graduate education. Over time, these programs have evolved into a number of robust inter-disciplinary centers and institutes, specialized research laboratories and partnerships that sustain the University's core strengths and enhance its competitiveness.  This growth has found the University to be ranked consistently among the top five North Carolina Universities in research productivity. Currently, the university manages a portfolio of 214 projects valued at $118 million. Sponsors of this research include: The U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Education, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Science Foundation, as well as the State of North Carolina , university partnerships, national laboratories and private industry.  The university offers specialized laboratories and centers to support engineering, agricultural, and computer science projects.  It also has a radio station and television station.

BACKGROUND

Shaw University is the oldest historically Black university in the South. Located in Raleigh, NC , the University was founded in 1865. Shaw is a private, coeducational, liberal arts university affiliated with the Baptist Church . Thirteen departments constitute a variety of academic offerings that are geared toward today’s employment market.

Shaw University is committed to providing educational opportunities for a diverse population who otherwise might not have the opportunity for education. The primary mission of the University is teaching with the commitment to maintain excellence in research and academic programs that foster intellectual enhancement and technological skills.

Additionally, Shaw University led a research study to investigate why Black WWII veterans were overlooked for the Medal of Honor. The study concluded that racism was the reason Black soldiers did not receive the top military award. In January 1995 the team’s findings were delivered to Washington , D.C. In April 1996, the University received word that the Pentagon had chosen seven of the ten soldiers whom the study had recommended to receive the prestigious medal.

The University stresses character development, which includes religious, cultural, social, and ethical values. Ultimately, Shaw University endeavors to graduate students with demonstrated competencies in their chosen fields of study

Prominent Episcopal clergy for the education of freed slaves founded St. Augustine ’s College in 1867 in Raleigh , North Carolina . Over the years, it has become one of the country's most highly respected private, accredited, historically black, coeducational institutions of higher learning. St. Augustine is an independent Episcopal 4-year institution. Degrees conferred are at a bachelor's level.

The Department of Human Performance and Wellness is committed to high quality development of the student. The first aim is to prepare students through the physical activity curriculum to function effectively in personal and social relationships. BACKGROUND

Winston-Salem State University was founded as the Slater Industrial Academy on September 28, 1892. It began in a one-room frame structure with 25 pupils and one teacher. In 1895, the school was recognized by the state of North Carolina , and in 1897 the Slater Industrial and State Normal School chartered it. From the beginning, the school has insisted upon the vital importance of elementary school teachers in any program of building an improved citizenship. On October 30, 1971, the General Assembly reorganized higher education in North Carolina , and on July 1, 1972, Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) became one of 16 constituent institutions of The University of North Carolina, subject to the control of a Board of Governors.
