ENROLLMENT 950

BACKGROUND

Harris-Stowe State College is a publicly supported four-year college offering degrees at the baccalaureate level.  It was founded by the St. Louis Public Schools as a normal school and thus became the first public teacher education institution west of the Mississippi River and the twelfth such institution in the United States .  A historic emphasis has been on teacher training, and has been expanded to include non-teaching bachelor’s degrees.  It is an urban-oriented institution and seeks to be of community service to the non-student population as well.

HEALTH RELATED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Harris-Stowe has bachelor degree programs in Health Care Management.

OTHER ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Harris-Stowe State College offers Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, and a Bachelor of Science in Education.  In 1981 the College received State approval for a Bachelor of Science in Urban Education.  This program is the only one of its kind at the undergraduate level in the United States and is designed to prepare non-teaching urban education specialists.  Additionally, this college offers programs in Information Sciences & Computer Technology, Professional Interdisciplinary Studies, Hospitality/Tourism Management, Early Childhood Development, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Health Care Management, Urban Specialization, Elementary Education, Middle School Education, Secondary Education, and Accounting.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

In June 1993, under a new State law, Harris-Stowe State College was authorized to expand its mission in order to address hitherto unmet higher education needs of Metropolitan St. Louis in key applied professional disciplines. Thus, the College became again virtually a new institution by including Technology, and Hospitality/Tourism Management.
